Renovations
As some of you know we are going through some massive renovations which started at the end of May. The idea for the renovations was actually Heather’s and Harath’s with the idea that they would move in with us and pay for them. After a bit of thought we all decided that it would probably be a win-win situation. They would have a larger home at less cost and we would have someone to look after us as we age.
After discussions with a couple of other contractors we decided to go with Revelstoke for the construction. Harath met Claudio, one of the owners while they were both taking swimming lessons. Claudio came to take a look at the house and listened to what we wanted and said that it he would be happy to have a set of basic plans drawn up. Once the preliminary plans were drawn we went to the office to have a look. After a brief discussion it was decided that a minor alteration would make the ideal layout for the main (ground) floor. Once the final preliminary drawings were approved a full set of plans and a budget was drawn up. Once signed it was a matter of time before construction would start.
The time frame for the extension was projected at four to six months. The original construction was scheduled to begin at the end of April or first week in May. Because of a minor mix-up at city hall and then the constant rain during the month of May construction did not begin until the end of the month.
Claudio provided the names of three firms for the following fixtures, kitchen cabinets, lighting, plumbing and granite counter tops. We were free to make our own choice of dealer and product from each of the three, who had a copy of our budget. The ‘girls’ made the final choice and so far everything is working out very well.
What has been transpiring has been; a 12 foot extension added to the rear of the house with two bedrooms in the new basement, the existing laundry room reconfigured and a bathroom (toilet, sink, large walk-in shower) added. The existing basement carpet and unlaying tiles removed and new carpeting will be installed throughout. A new stackable clothes washer and dryer purchased and installed in a special built closet. A crawl space, which would be below the extended main floor, was added off of one of the bedrooms. We also had a new highly efficient gas furnace and a/c installed. The existing fireplaces will remain but will no longer be used as our main source of heat.
On the main floor, a new rear entrance ‘mud room’ and 1/2 bath was added to the extension which remained at the existing lower level. The existing kitchen and dining room have been reconfigured to become the kitchen and the new area is now the dining room. A new island separates the two areas, however, it still leaves a large open area. The two picture windows and double doors in the dining room provide amble light. Hard wood flooring has been installed in the new areas which match the existing hard word.
A new painting scheme has also been applied to the entire basement and main floor.
Phil the foreman had been to see us at least once a day since construction started giving us an update on what would be happening that day and the following day or days. The general labourers have always been the same friendly. We have also only ever had the same sub-contractors for specific tastes. Always having the same people makes things so much easier for several reasons.
So here it is, almost the end of November and the projected end date is the first week in December which will be the six month mark.
So far we have had no complaints about any of the workers or workmanship and are very happy to recommend Revelstoke to anyone who is looking for a contractor.
