I know I have been very remiss in not making any entries over the summer. For some reason the time has just seemed to slip by and when I look back I wonder where it has gone.
I have been busy gardening, have a couple of plots now. The front yard is all flowers, bushes and roses while in the back is a smallish vegetable garden as well as flowers along the fences and patio. I also managed to obtain one of the city allotment plots and have put quite a bit of work into it. The plot had not been used in several years and was quite overgrown with weeds. Luckily I met Bernie, the caretaker with a root-tiller on the back of his tractor. For a small fee he made short work of the weeds and tilled up the soil quite nicely. Mind you it has taken a fair amount of work to keep the weeds down.
After marking out the rows in two foot intervals I spread newspaper down alternating rows which would become the walking rows and then covered them a wood chips which were supplied by the city. I am not certain on just how many wheelbarrow loads it took to cover the rows with a deep coating of chips but they and the newspaper have kept weeds out of the pathways.
Next year I am planning on putting newspaper as a weed barrier in some of the vegetable rows as well. They should do a good job at keeping the weeds at bay among the tomatoes and other 'stalked' vegetables.
Olivia and Heather have arrived back home and Harath will be arriving in just under two weeks. They have decided that Canada is the place to be, well until they get itchy feet again. Hopefully the job situation will improve once the school season starts.
Olivia made it to the Upper Canada Village "Time Travellers" camp again this year because of the age limit it will be last year that she will be one of the children in the village. No one is quite sure what she will be doing next summer. Her first year in high school starts next week and she says that she is excited about going. It will be a new adventure for her.
The past two days we spent with another Bill Neelin playing tourist in Ottawa. The other Bill Neelin is from the United States and it was a pleasure to show him our capital city.
