A great day today! Got to talk to a telephone scammer for at least an hour and a half. I love talking to telephone scammers - just ask Wendy!
Here is basically what happened:
Wendy originally answered a long distance telephone call (#519 800 1046 in Windsor Ontario). We know it is long distance because it is three rings instead of the usual one. An East Indian sounding man was offering her a savings of 11% on our VISA card if we could do some verification. She handed the phone to me and I took the rest of the call. He was saying that I had to provide verifying details to obtain 11% interest from VISA and once this was done a confirmation letter would be sent. Kept him talking for at least 45 minutes saying that I wanted him to confirm who I was because he had all my info. The typical response was that I had to do the confirming because it needed to be sent to some government body and then it would be confirmed by VISA. I said just send me the forms and I would send them off if everything was correct. This conversation kept going in circles; he wanting my info, me telling him to tell me what it was because he already had it. I even got to talk to the ‘supervisor’ but it sounded like the same guy. Again it was you provide no you provide the verification. Finally he said that he would mail me the forms and they would arrive in 5 days. I am not holding my breath. In fact if they don’t arrive next week I may just call the number and find out where they are. Another voice came on the line which sounded more ‘english’ and I simply said that I wanted them to confirm the info they had on me, confirmed that forms would be sent. The east indian came back on again and finally when signing off he said god bless and that started another conversation about christianity. I was definitely con and he was definitely pro. Then the line went dead. That conversation lasted at least 45 minutes! But wait - he called back to continue talking about christianity on telephone #416 981 0001 (in Toronto Ontario) that conversation lasted at least another 45 minutes. I bet you didn’t know that I was one of 8 kids who’s right wing Christian father used to beat us 3 or 4 times a week because we didn’t say our prayers correctly. Hmmm well neither did I. :-) Call was cut again and never one to give up on a conversion he called yet again so after 5 minutes I finally told him that was enough and hung up!
I did a reverse telephone lookup on both numbers and lots of recent complaints about the 519# and basically the same thing - lower interest rate on VISA or Master Card. The 416# also had lots of complaints but dating back to 2011 and those were mostly to do with “you won a cruise.”
